The folks over at the Disney Insider blog gave me and some of the “Sketchbook Ornaments" I designed for the Disney Stores a little shout out this morning. Thanks, guys! I say “some”, because most of them have sold out by now. Hopefully you didn’t wait too long to get your favorite!
You know how your mind wanders when you’re on the phone and you doodle without really realize that’s what you’re doing? Apparently Doodle Merida needed to get out onto the paper.
It’s week number two for the “Sketchbook Ornament Collection” I worked on for the Disney Stores. See our sneak peak going on now at Disney.com and get them before they are available in stores. This week we release our PIXAR ornaments, including these three “open globe” designs featuring Mike and Sully, Nemo and the Aliens from Toy Story. See them all here!
A while ago I had posted about the limited edition Brave nesting dolls I had designed. You can read more about them in the link below.
What I didn’t post at the time were my original pencil drawings, seen here. As you can see, the original concept was to have Merida as a small fig inside. Eventually we decided it was more in line with the story to have Merida have her own “doll” in this set. We liked the figurine idea, so I thought maybe it could be the “wisps”. Unfortunately they would have been too small due to the the size of the smallest of the nesting doll it was to fit into. In the end, it wasn’t really worth it and they were cut from the concept. For the final product I feel like the art really spoke for itself. I was happy to have the chance to showcase these great characters in a style all my own. And, while this was a little out of the box for your usual product, I do think it told the story of Brave in a fun and unique way.
Finally! These have taken a while to come out. But, they are finally available at the Disney Store. After almost not making it into our “Brave” assortment, the nesting dolls ended up getting made after all! A lot of work went into these, so I am glad to see them out just in time for the film release. Pixar was very open to the stylization of the characters that I came up with and had no notes for me on that. I drew them in a style very much my own that I thought would work for this medium. Having never worked on nesting dolls before , I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into. Elinor proved to be the most challenging since you need to see her back and doesn’t have all the hair that Merida has. Mum bear was much easier, since she appears in bear form. The triplets and bear cubs one pice of art “wrapped” around the form since there are multiple characters. All in all I think the challenge was a fun one. And knowing that I never had to change my art style was even more exciting! There is some fun storytelling going on here if you are familiar with the story. Hopefully you enjoy this unique piece of “Brave” product. Get them while you can , they are a limited edition of 2500 pieces!
Sometimes I work on REALLY large plush. Seen here with mum bear at the Walt Disney studio store in Burbank.
Available now at the Disney Store. A snow globe I designed for the upcoming film “Brave”. I think it captures the essence of the film and Merida’s journey quite well. It’s tricky coming up with what will be the first snow globe from this film. You want to make sure you are telling a story and capturing a great “moment” in the film. But, you need to not be so story specific that it won’t resonate with people who may not have seen the film (yet). Also, it needs to be a great design. We work very closely with Pixar when developing product for a new film. I had done a few variations on this scene , and this is the one we went with . Hope you like it.
Excited for Pixar’s “Brave”? The first wave of Disney Store product is now available, including this toddler Merida doll I designed. More to come in the near future…… check it out at www.disneystore.com
